Some good Bluebonnet books… September 3, 2009
Posted by freelibrarian in : Uncategorized , trackbackSorry – I got busy this summer and neglected my blog a little bit, but now that school is back, I am very excited to share more good books with you. This summer, I read several of the titles from this year’s Bluebonnet list for 3rd – 5th grade students.
I really enjoyed several of the nonfiction titles from the list.
- Pale Male: Citizen Hawk of New York City, by Janet Schulman, is the story of a hawk who makes his unlikely home in New York City.
- Nic Bishop’s Frogs taught me things I did not know about frogs. The close-up photographs, taken all around the world, are truly remarkable.
- We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, by Kadir Nelson, tells the story of African-American baseball players who had to create their own baseball league in the 1920′s, due to segregation. These athletes faced many hardships to play the game they loved.
- Lady Liberty: A Biography, by Doreen Rappaport, is all about the Statue of Liberty – how she was made, and how she came to stand in New York’s harbor as a symbol of our country’s many opportunities.
- Finally, Help Me, Mr. Mutt, by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel, is a very fun book – especially if you like dogs. One of the book’s authors – Susan Stevens Crummel - will visit our school in November. Stay tuned for more information.
